Personal vid…fabulous Christmas with my family and my crazy nephews who think I’m a real princess (glad to know someone noticed!).

Note: Cleavage comment relates to the fact that somehow when they’re hugging me they manage to pull my tops down until I look like I’m advertising a “say goodbye to your feet” style bra!

Fave quotes of the day…

“Because you’re a real princess, have you got a kingdom?”

“If you’ve already got a boyfriend, could I be your second boyfriend?”

“As you’re related and you’ve been so nice can you be our second mummy?”

Sweeties! A really great evening with my sister,  mum, stepfather, boyfriend, brother in law and my crazy nephews who may now be my nephews, children and boyfriends!

The Soul of Man Has Been Given Wings | Humanity | Freedom | Love | Happiness | Self Realisation

Vid from Anonymous: A message to humanity

https://youtu.be/xM1gXr2Hn4Q

From “The Great Dictator”

“I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone, and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men; cries out for universal brotherhood; for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people. To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you; who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel! Who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men – machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate; the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of St. Luke, it is written that the kingdom of God is within man, not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people, have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy, let us use that power. Let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfill that promise. They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfill that promise. Let us fight to free the world! To do away with national barriers! To do away with greed, with hate and intolerance! Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers, in the name of democracy, let us all unite! Hannah, can you hear me? Wherever you are, look up Hannah! The clouds are lifting! The sun is breaking through! We are coming out of the darkness into the light! We are coming into a new world; a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed, and brutality. Look up, Hannah! The soul of man has been given wings and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow! Into the light of hope, into the future! The glorious future, that belongs to you, to me and to all of us. Look up, Hannah. Look up!”

I love... | Decorating | Being a Hippie | All Things Pink | Vegan Nutcutlets | Lana Del Rey | Laughing | Celebrating with Elvis

I love...being the only PreRaphaelite Fairy Princess going steady with the only Teddy Boy in the neighbourhood. Happy birthday to Elvis for midnight! Planning to celebrate with some well earned rest...if I can make him take a little break from painting. The office is coming on with a serious case of being pink as the decorating continues - see pix...going seriously vibrant with the transformation!  Hall and the living room will be darker (purple and a deeper pink). The hallway will be done at the same time because it will be either dark pink or purple. Very dramatic!

Loves of the day are: Lush Cosmetics, bubbleBath, Lana Del Rey, lemon water, Daisy Dream by Marc Jacobs & vegan nut cutlets, foot massages, being a girlie hippie (bobo princess) & hanging out with my bf.

Also love the silly banter we break into when we're doing DIY together. Usually starting with someone making a MightyBoosh quote: "Do I look like a reasonable man? Or a peppermint nightmare?" - starts a stream of messing about that ended up with me rolling on the floor in hysterics while he tried to pull my pants down and paint by bum blue!

He's funny...silly...but damn kind and really thoughtful. So I'm dying to celebrate his birthday. I got him some great presents...and I can't wait to see his face light up.

Better have a bath...he'll be home soon ♡♡♡ Yay!

Happy days hipsters! Stay free; keep smiling;  be nice to each other; & ShareTheLove

The Meaning of Life | Muslim | God | The Universal Source | Humanity | Non-Judgement | World Peace

https://youtu.be/7d16CpWp-ok

Like many watchers I am not a Muslim. Though I am given to understand that a Muslim is someone who believes in what I would call the "Undivided Creative Intelligence that underpins all reality". As Guru Nanak said "There is One Reality. It's Name is Truth" in describing the "Universal Source".

So many people do believe. Unfortunately religion often gets so caught up with dogma and focuses on those things that divide people that it fails to notice, we all have a lot in common.

One life. One Source. One human race.

Humans interpret scripture sometimes to say, this way is the only way. Rather than this way is the way for me and other people exist too and they have some different beliefs to me...but  if "God"/"Allah"/"Source" deemed them worthy of existence then to make any judgement against a person for their differences...whatever they may be...is kind of like saying, "God" did an imperfect job and my judgement makes me superior to something created.

I am not a Christian either. But when Jesus said, "Judge not lest ye be judged", I think he was saying, if you choose to make a judgement over anything or anyone that exists as being less worthy than you, you create within yourself a conflict or division that we're not intended to have.

It is that assumption of superiority required for us to judge another that creates enemies within and without and compromises our connection to the Source. No one wants to do that deep down. Judge others enough and you could end up perceiving the human race as your enemy and...well...if you opt out of the one human race, you're sacrificing your own humanity as you go.

I don't believe we are judged and sent to hell...but I do believe someone could lose their humanity to the extent that  facing their "God" could become untenable.

We don't know how this all works yet. I teach energy healing. I consider it neutral and it doesn't have any place in my personal religious observations. But it's very important to me.

I tend not to talk about religion (though I have studied it) for the same reason someone who wrote a book on meditation techniques wouldn't include information on their religion as it wouldn't be appropriate.

However, at a time when we are being told by mainstream media that there is a terrorist threat and Muslims want all non Muslims dead...I think your passion and eloquence speak for themselves. And many people...part of our one human race...feel like you do.

Thank you for sharing xxx

Leave Behind Fantasies of Specialness | How to turn inspiration into wisdom & achieve Self-Realisation

I believe absolutely that we create our own reality. But in the sense that it is inevitable we will project our definitions and limitations onto it based on our past, memories, hopes and ambitions. It's kind of like we bind ourselves into a subjective interpretation of events. If we were to do this without self awareness or any effort at personal growth, it would soon create an ego centred idea of reality that would be entirely illusory. And likely restrictive leaving an almost paranoid sense of an entirely external world that's "out to get you". I observed this in a number of clients over time and many interpret it a psychic attack. In a way it doesn't hurt to resolve the problem in a similar way - clearing negative karmic bonds using reversal spells or rituals like The Killing Moon and Nataraj Dance of Destruction (www.mayamagickal.net). But I would advise any client serious about resolving a matter using magick to do something constructive that their conscious mind would respond to, to ensure they used the liberating effect of any magickal work to further their development and prevent it happening again.

A number of attunement courses with daily meditation and grounding would be most effective if they were open to this (Kundalini Reiki and Avalonian Alignment in particular www.mayastar.net/aap.htm are excellent for daily meditation practices).

Unfortunately the fixation on an external antagonist can blind someone to the idea they might be able to do something about it. Sometimes magick can reduce hindering elements so significantly they naturally shift perspective and are able to take control of their development with a new pespective and sense of power.

Those working on self realisation (through whatever means), are hopefully learning to maintain a more objective view. Raising consciousness and ignoring the subjective ego centred elements of reality could create (at times) a situation where the person isn't engaging with their life or people on normal level.

The long and short is I think that devolving into fantastical world views (good or bad) is something we all risk when we have a lot of information but haven't developed our self awareness to the extent that we are able to determine its relevance personally and objectively.

It is also worth considering despite the risks, understanding that by our interpretation we create our own experience of reality, does put the onus on the individual to take responsibility for their lives, thoughts, feelings and reactions.

This can seem as liberating as it is daunting as often the first thing we do is to use the new perspective to re frame past experiences and when they have been negative, understanding we had a role in creating them can feel depressing before the "shift" in perspective allows a more complete development of objective (spiritual?) consciousness, which enables us to see how we could have done it differently and to feel empowered by knowing that were the same situation to arise, this time we would understand it differently.

The information comes first usually as ideas and inspiration.  Then we can interpret it subjectively/intellectually and it becomes knowledge. Which can empower us providing we continue the process...and that is to develop understanding by an objective interpretation of that knowledge. That is what I would call wisdom. But until out each stage of that process and our expression of it is congruent, there are liable to be times of inner conflict and confusion. That's where daily meditation is so important in ensuring we continue the process and don't get stuck in the same old loops!

Paris | Empathy | Prayer | Healing the World | Reiki | Sharing the Love | Can you help?

Yesterday I really didn't feel it was appropriate for me to share my usual posts and #linspo given the tragedy in Paris.

A bit about me...I know some believe aspergirls like me don't have empathy. But we do. There are degrees on the autism spectrum. I need routine to function. I have a crazy ass memory. I am great at my work and love what I do. I think to much. Find it hard to write concisely. And am very knowledgeable. But I am also kind of kookie and eccentric. I could never be a rebel because I can't register people as being authorities over me (which meant as a child I was considered contrary and defiant...but as an adult means I am considered a non conformist and a bit of an enigma).

My silence regarding the situation wasn't because Aspergers makes me a narcissist and I didn't relate etc...it was because like any human being I could only see the pointlessness of people killing other people for spurious reasons. Achieving nothing. Hurting many. I am very sensitive. I would consider myself and empath. And it upset me enormously to see such violence.

I am a human being and I am not alone in the fact that I was moved to tears by the news. I was moved to tears again, to see the top trending hashtag on Twitter was PrayForWorld - and PrayForParis. That all around the world, despite our apparent differences, to see such senseless and cruel acts commited by those who seek knuckledragging rascists to provide them with retribution and begin a ridiculous cycle of violence that achieves nothing, hurts many, and breaks the heart of anyone making their way through the world with one.

I spent the night retweeting on www.twitter.mayastar.net & finally added my two cents with a songoftheday blog I shared around my social media.

Today I felt uplifted by the show of solidarity. By the messages of people just like you and me. By the hope that exists...because people care. I hear one of the security guards at the stadium saved many lives before he became a casualty too.

I think it's vital we understand, Muslims demonstrate against extemism. Shoulder to shoulder with the human race (there's only one after all). United in our dream of a better world.

Can Reiki Heal the World?

What can I do to help? What can we all do? Prayer is a good start. But my forte is Energy Healing which I teach online as distance courses internationally.

I believe Reiki can help in bringing healing to the world or a situation or people that are left behind, in the process of dying or in the process of making a transition after death? Yes. I very much do. Can Reiki (the most well known and popular of my courses) heal the world? I don't know. But I think it is a better option than violence!

Those who are attuned to Usui Reiki or another form of energy healing (depending on their own experience and confidence) might feel they wish they could send healing but not feel confident about its effectiveness.

"Ki" (the energy we work with in Reiki) is Universal Life Force/Source Energy; it isn't subject to laws of time and space.

The healer acts as a channel and though we may use symbols or tools to communicate our intention, it is our intention that is communicated to Source. The symbols and tools and techniques we use are to help us in quelling the doubts of the ego and conscious mind by keeping conscious mind busy; keeping it busy by providing it with its own focus so our intention can be communicated to the Universe. We may call that unifying Source God...or we may consider it a part of the expression of a single energy/consciousness we don't call God but consider part a Multi-Dimensional wholeness of creation.

However you define it, working with Reiki often leads people to redefine their ideas later on. Personal experience of the sense of connection to Source Energy inevitably leads you to a new idea...that life is unified.

New questions come up...how can we judge other people if we share a common Source?  How can we harm others? How can we harm ourselves when we have a part in the one "Divine Expression" that is the "Wholeness of Creation? Are angels part of that wholeness? What about deities? What about animals? Saints? Does this "Wholeness" cover different dimensions and states of consciousness? Does it keep us connected to those we have lost on this side? What is the nature of the Source?

For me, I would summarise my 26 years of experience and study tells me the nature of The Source is love and evolution (in a spiritual sense); that it is intelligent; unifies all life; is Multi-Dimensional in nature. And that it does indeed connect us in some way to all other life on earth and off it; that life doesn't end when a physical body dies.

I think it is therefore entirely appropriate for anyone to provide healing to situations, the world, someone who is dying or recently deceased. Because healing takes place on many levels. You may think of this proactive method as being a kind of 'dynamic prayer'.

To illustrate a little further...

My dad recently died of cancer and during his limited time from diagnosis to death he was avid that I should tell people about energy healing for people who are terminally ill. It gave him so much comfort and he felt strongly that people in his situation and loved ones of someone who was dying would find this so helpful. That no matter how hopeless you may perceive a situation...no matter or helpless you may feel when confronted with such a circumstance, there is something you can do.

I know blogging about "healing the dying" may not be what draws people to Energy Healing! But dad was right. We shy away from death as if we are useless in the face of it due to the fact we are mortal. Allowing ourselves to do nothing because we feel we can't do enough leads us to feel powerless...and this can be depressing and debilitating.

In fact, death is part of a natural cycle and love doesn't end when brain death of someone we love occurs. (That is my personal belief).

It would be strange that people evolved with a capacity of empathy that extends to strangers; love that extends beyond death; and a natural instinct that leaves us prone to acts of kindness that are not looking for something in return. Why would the survival of the fittest lead to a level of altruism that would see almost everyone (should the situation arise), to risk their life for a stranger and suddenly suspend their own notions of prejudice, divisiveness or limiting beliefs about the nature of love when confronted with an emergency?

To me the fact that faced with this tragedy the tweets I read last night were of people (including Muslims by the way...the only people who support terrorism are terrorists!), showed that others cried at reading the coverage. Some felt helpless. Some felt scared. But I saw a lot of people praying for Paris; praying for peace and praying for the world. I didn't see anyone spouting off judgement or hatred. Just a whole lot of people feeling the same pain. Wanting to make the world better. Unified in that purpose. That is a beautiful thing.

So I am writing this blog about my method of "Reiki Sharing". Floods, famines, wars, suffering, earthquakes - suffering so far from us we may feel stumped in how to help,  I have a way I help and that I believe others might benefit from.

I have a small crystal sphere that's made of labradorite. That's a blue crystal with areas that are iridescent. I hold in in both palms in a prayer position, and focus my intention on channelling Reiki to the situation. The blue sphere makes a nice "proxy" that helps my conscious mind to get on board with the idea "the world" is accessible for sending healing to. And I trust that the healing will go where it is needed and be received by those that need it.

In Usui Reiki there are symbols you may choose to use to focus your intention on distance healing. There are Kanjis (hand positions) you might use too. And the use of a 'proxy' for sending distance healing is useful for some too.

So if you are attuned to Reiki, please consider sending healing along with your prayers for the world.

If you are not attuned but would like to be, you can find more information at www.mayastar.net/reikicourses.htm

Reiki is a very comprehensive and versatile system and I am privileged to have been able to give up the 'day job' to dedicate my life to teaching people all over the world something I believe so strongly in.

Please do visit my website and request an information pack...consider whether you feel Reiki would be of benefit to you, to those around you...and maybe to the world too.

With blessings x

Earth Song | #MichaelJackson

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(Ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(Ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(Ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What about us)
What about death again
(Ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

If you really want to live...remember what you'd die for, and live for it! | Freedom | Death | Cancer | Reiki | & Love

I love...days where my bathwater matches my swallow tattoo!

Designed by my sister and worn by all my family on T shirts & jewellery & ink by family & friends close to my dad. A united front...facing terminal cancer with him.

Despite the chemo & radiotherapy, the tumour grew so fast his symptoms progressed v quickly.

Dad had a bone cancer ten years ago; and though the brain tumour wasn't related, dad had lived every day like it was a gift.

And I think this summer, he kind of taught us all to do the same. We all miss him...but if there's a silver lining, facing the journey into terminal illness...it was challenging of course...painful...but we will all remember the good stuff.

In the words of Mike Skinner of The Streets "You left me behind to remind me of you" <3

He slipped into a coma and died peacefully at home and we were there with him to care for him right to the end. I spent the summer dancing in his garden when he was getting weaker...so we had quite a laugh (including our obligatory 'swallow spotting'...something me and dad always did).

If you really want to live...remember what you'd die for, and live for it!

The swallow tatt is has been adopted by a lot of cancer patients - lifer patients like dad as well as survivors as a symbol of freedom...we all have our demons and being able to live without fear of them is when we truly know what freedom is.

I have a number of students that face similar situations...and they learn Reiki from me. "Healing" someone who is dying? Yes. It's entirely appropriate. Reiki provides healing on many levels and may help with symptoms and mood. Death is a natural process...but it's one we tend to detach from these days. Considering it something that happens anonymously in a clinical setting and something that doesn't involve us. But once it was something we would have experienced personally at a younger age and caring for someone you love right to the end is natural. You don't stop washing them or making them comfortable because you think "this one's a goner". No...you administrator care and support right to the end because you love them way beyond life! And sharing Reiki or healing with someone who is dying...even in those last days...it's a natural thing to do <3

Shout from the rooftops! I'm TOTALLY in love...with Elvis! I Sorry I just couldn't keep it in!

You know you're onto a winner when you're so in love you graffiti each other like teenagers...he brings you vegan salads home from Starbucks because you had no time to cook...he texts in the middle of the day to remind you he loves you...and you get butterflies when you think of him getting home from work. Smile and sing to Taylor Swift while you're feeding the pets and missing him because he went home 5 minutes ago.

Seriously...I wasn't expecting to fall in love. My last relationship was with someone who was unkind and kind of arrogant. He wasn't liked by my friends or family as they felt him living with me while I worked and he painted toy soldiers...was kinda taking advantage. They didn't know the extent of it. And at the time, neither did I. But the great thing about being an aspergirl is that once you realise someone's taking you for a ride you move on quickly and the emotional baggage evaporates as it dawns on you...he was an emotional scammer...a liar...possibly a narcissist...and according to himself was jealous and resentful and angry.

Anyway. Takes more than that keep an aspergirl down! We're uncompromising in that way!

This year was almost Shakespearean. It's so unlikely. My dad became ill and died. Peacefully at home with us taking care of him. I spent the summer dancing in the garden to carnival and hip hop...and was much admired by my neighbour. A friend of my dad's. Known commonly as Elvis. Elvis is the kindest and most genuine man I have ever met. He was with me and my family throughout. Friends with my friends. Drop dead gorgeous. And somehow it went from conversations over the balcony to excitedly planning our first Christmas together in a matter of months.

He treats me like a princess. We sometimes bicker about silly things. But we make up fast. We are both are self employed so work our hours around each other as much as poss so we have lots of time together.

He has nearly as many tattoos as me. Loves my corsets and red hair. Loves...some stuff you guys will just have to guess at. He's a teddy boy. I dress in Victorian styles (mostly...but also some Harajuku & Lolita styles sometimes). We make a striking couple.

Spend nights day dreaming about owning a gypsy wagon and a carousel.

He comes home showered and always happy...he loves his work like I love mine. And we are both independently happy but happier together.

I felt the need to come out and make it official. We've been 'going steady'...but now our considerations for our life together spread into years.

He notices everything I love and got me a Nemesis Now fairy and unicorn statue for my birthday, a Marc Jacobs perfume and a long Joe Browns hippie chick cardigan. Sooooo thoughtful.

We love listening to motown. We love music full stop. He notices when I henna my hair. He even likes the smell of henna. He looks after me. I help him out too of course...but the point of this blog is to try to cover everything I adore about my Elvis...without even mentioning his abs (swoon).

He is fit. V strong. Tall. Thin. Always polite and well turned out. Never judges. Always asks me about how something makes me feel as far as my aspergers goes...he genuinely cares.

I have known him through my dad for a number of years...he thought I was a teenager though. When he found out I was his age and I was the mysterious nocturnal hermit girl...the wooing began in earnest. And within a few days we were sneaking about to hook up...totally the worst kept secret in the neighbourhood, he was spotted leaving my home at five in the morning twice!

He is amazing. I tell him that all the time. But now we're making plans for Christmas I feel things are official enough for me to blog this and say...it's official! We are in a long term relationship. We're totally in love. And both deliriously happy.

Sorry if I sound like an extended advert for Clinton Cards...but it's that good!

If Facebook had the option, our relationship status would be soulmates <3

Happy happy days in boho heaven!

PS. Sorry to anyone who found my 'shout from the rooftops' overly dramatic and sentimental. I hope you find someone like I did some day too.

Energy Healing | Usui Reiki | Distance Attunements | Channelling | & Mayastar

Mayastar Academy of Natural Healing & Spiritual Development provide online distance learning courses in a number of attunement based modalities.

The most popular of these is Traditional Usui Reiki as it's the system most familiar to most people.

For those unfamiliar with distance healing and the Reiju system that preceded the system of Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki today, there may be some question about whether attunements can be passed distantly in the same way that healing treatments are.

There are teachers that charge extremely high prices and they often will try to undermine the work of those who don't. I don't feel this exclusivity was in the spirit of Mikao Usui's intentions! And I am commited to making Energy Healing accessible to people. I charge for my time but not for the energy.

I have been working in this field for 25 years and established Mayastar Academy to teach internationally in 2004.

Some student testimonials can be found on the website...and I haven't had any complaints.

So to the naysayers and those who think there is only one way, I would point out, the energy we work with is Source Energy; it isn't subject to laws of time and space or any limitation excepting limitations put on it by the practictioner/teacher.

My experience would tend to indicate that those with less limitations and less resistance tend to have a deeper understanding and more fulfilling experience as a channel of Reiki Energy than those who have restrictive beliefs or preconceptions about Source Energy.

You can find articles on my site about Metaphysics, Energy Attunements, Energy Exchange & What to Expect from Mayastar courses.

So I recommend you acquaint yourself with the information (and experiences of others) before deciding whether you feel distance courses would work well for you.

You can email me any time if you have any questions or to receive an information pack and syllabus at mayastar.net@gmail.com

Mini Blog | Cruelty Free | Natural Beauty | Skincare | Lush | Argan Oil | Creme de la Mer

Mini Blog | Cruelty Free Stoptober Experiment | www.tumblr.annalouisemay.net | www.wordpress.annalouisemay.net

I will review products individually in small blogs over the coming weeks. But before I do, I thought a little update.

As anyone who follows my blog is aware...I am v lazy. I rarely wear make up. I don't wear foundation. I tend to keep a neat look by making sure my hair is hennaed and my roots are done and well conditioned. My eyelashes and eyebrows are tinted. My eyebrows are shaped and tidy. My lips are hydrated. My skin is hydrated. And I wear lipstains like Benetint or Posie Tint from Benefit usually, with a Burts Bees tinted lipbalm to top up. Or I used a revlon lipgloss/stain, applied it and wiped it off to leave a fuschia tint that didn't look over done.

I'm 42. I don't have much sun damage. I don't really have lines. My skin is normal. Sometimes a bit dry in winter. I went through some hassle when I came off the pill five years ago and my skin got dry. Nothing seemed to work. I knew it would be hormonal and would balance out. I tried all kinds of creams and ended up with a rash from one and thought, that's it. I will bite the bullet and try Creme de la Mer. Everyone raves about it. It can't make this worse and I am wasting a fortune. (Note - I tried Lush's Skin's Shangri La at this time. Not cheap. It sorted the moisture but gave me clogged pores).

3 weeks later my skin was transformed to the point people thought I had, had something done. It appeared poreless. Spotless. Smooth. Moisturised. And I was amazed. Truly hadn't expected a miracle despite the reviewers claims. But it was one!

Since then I have favoured La Mer moisturisers. The body cream, eye balm, moisturiser and lip balm. I also use the regenerating serum in the summer as a light alternative.

According to the PETA, La Mer, owned by Estee Lauder lost its cruelty free status a few years ago. This wasn't due to anything La Mer or Lauder changed but rather a change in PETA categorisation. La Mer don't test on animals. Their products are not made by people who do. La Mer is essentially cruelty free. But...they sell to China. And the Chinese test every skincare product they sell on animals.

So now a moral dilemma. Is La Mer cruelty free as it was until a few years back before being reclassified? Is is cruelty free when I buy it in the UK but not if I bought it in China. Or is it immoral for La Mer/Lauder to sell to China and we should boycott them by virtue of a lack of integrity? Or should we all lean heavily on China to stop their methods?

For me, my Stoptober experiment was interesting. I am recently full vegan (diet not lifestyle) after being mostly vegetarian since my teens. And I had used Lush products during my Stoptober experiment as I have enjoyed them since their Cosmetics to Go days.

Well. The second my experiment ended, I am back on La Mer. In a month it really wrecked my face. The Fun I used as body wash was great. And I liked the body lotions I used. Liked. They did give me soft skin. But in honesty...they weren't user friendly. Not fast to absorb. Some better than others and my dry skin on my legs cleared up...but I was using argan oil all over before bed too (in place of bio oil).

Having to look into each product was interesting. Lush use some harsh foaming agents. They use laureth-4 which is not good for allergy prone skin. They do use some petroleum based additives...but the ingredients list on the labels is user friendly and the natural ingredients...all good. But the bad side? Being honest, the smells which seem such a treat when used occasionally, when used together create such a strong smell I couldn't wear perfume all month because my hair smelled of vanilla, my body smelled of orange and patchouli after washing with something smelling citrusy and bathing in a sakura scented bath.

It got a bit much really. Especially because the body lotions (while effective) seemed to need a half hour sinking in period before dressing. Something I don't have. So they may be good for before bed but daily use did become more time consuming than I am used to.

So for this month...a simple test...I will use the Lush bath stuff and washes as before. Herbalism and Ocean Salt for my face. But only La Mer body cream, argan oil, La Mer moisturiser and serum. And see how I go.

I can't make a conclusion at all...these are hardly clinical trials. But I am starting to wonder if maybe the moisturising bath and shower stuff I was using left a detergent residue on my skin causing the dry patches...watch this space anyway!

Also, those who think Creme de la Mer is crazy expensive...£70 wasted on Lush face moisturisers that ruined my skin is worse. If you bought a bath bomb for each day of a month - about £3 a day that would cost you twice as much as using Creme de la Mer face moisturiser (a little goes a long way).

One thing I will quickly big up though! Lush's lipsticks and eyeliners - versatile and work v much in the way I use Benetint/Posie Tint. I will definitely continue using their make up and hair care...by the end of November I will decide whether I will continue with their cleansers too!

So my subject to review conclusion at this point is...I think Lush and La Mer will work well together for me.  I think my dry skin problems may have come from using Dove products that are too full of chemicals and slightly irritated my skin.

Also...my eyes have been opened to the fact that sometimes choices are based on what works best and others may choose based on company ethics. And right now, I am not sure where I stand on that.

Don't let anyone feel less than you are | Red flags of abuse | Be true to yourself ♡

...but one day you'll realise that you needed them like a hole in the head and you came away thinking you felt crap...but realising you still had integrity. And you will love again. They weren't capable of it with someone who trusted them...they lost a lot when they lost you.

Never let anyone feel less than you are. Never. If they don't make you feel fantastic and encourage you in your life and your work and pursuit of your hobbies...if you're in a relationship where someone resents you for your success...please recognise this is a red flag. Not all narcissists are easy to spot. Covert narcissism fuels the 'forever victim' and 'forever unlucky' and weirdly negative in ways that seem nonsensical in otherwise apparently 'normal' people. Abuse of trust is still abuse.

Seriously friends. Live for love. Don't settle for less. You're not worth less. You're worth the fairytale ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ALM (Maya)

About the Killing Moon 30 Day Karmic Reversal Ritual Intensive | Special Offer for Samhain

The Killing Moon Karmic Reversal Ritual Intensive is one of the most popular with Mayastar and Maya Magickal and I receive many enquries about this working and the potential uses; it is one of the most comprehensive ritual options I provide so I will tell you a little more about it based on customer enquiries regarding this option. You can find information on the ritual here www.mayamagickal.net/killingmoon.htm.

One of the main areas people ask about is whether this spell would work for any kind of psychic attack; a psychic attack is any kind of directed negative 'assault' (often taking a very draining form) on the astral level.  There is a misconception that psychic attack is always deliberate and is always supernatural in origin.  In fact, emotional unstable people around us can effect psychic attacks unconsciously or deliberately.  The working is very effective in clearing any connections that are formed to you by another's negative choices. Regardless of how they are manifesting them; it is the intention that is key.  The spell dissolves or resolves the link that this kind of connection forms rather than attacking the person.  So in no sense is it a hex or a curse to be used in retaliation.  But it's great for healing yourself of the effects and also provides some protection.

Negative Karmic Bonds as explained above can be formed with people.  But we can also form bonds that cause us conflict or disharmony that we fail to consciously release.  Such as bad memories or negative habits we have had in the past.  In addition, a supernatural component can present in cases where people have been in a bad situation or a negative place emotionally or spiritually...even physically. It can leave one vulnerable to what we call 'hitchers'.  Now hitchers come and go.  Usually they are a nuisance and they can tend to perpetuate problems because they're lower astral beings.  To be clear, these are not demonic in any way - they just resonate with lower energies.  They are essentially elemental beings and they are drawn to our negative experiences.  Over time they can form a Negative Bond.  Usually they come and go throughout our lives.  But they can turn a normal situation into a complex one.  The Killing Moon addresses this issue too.

The cleansing & healing effect of the Killing Moon is that which is noticed and reported as an unexpected side effect by clients.  Of course it makes sense - as the working goes on, you are being 'freed up' from restrictive energies that may be compromising your energy flow.  So the harmonising effect of the working shouldn't be under estimated; I would go as far as to recommend it for use as a healing spell because so much of healing has to do with clearing out the rubbish before we work on drawing in the beneficial energies.

In that regard, the spell is also useful in any kind of work where you want to ultimately draw positive energies in.  They all work better if you've cleared out the negative ones or any negative influences.  Reversal spells are good for this, but the Killing Moon is the most comprehensive solution.

The option for the Triple Working has gained a lot of popularity; particularly for those who have a long standing issue or a problem that's very complex and seems to be affecting more and more areas of their life.  Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint how or when it started but knowing the origin isn't necessary; the spell is comprehensive enough to follow each 'bond' back to its source and either dissolve the bond or resolve the issue.

The Triple Working would also be indicated in cases where the origin in known (or you have strong reason to suspect), or suspected to be supernatural or the result of 'black magick'.  As I said before, it's not a retaliation spell, it's resolving the problem by working with the natural state of harmony the Universe and all things tend towards.  Black magick doesn't do that therefore it's unstable and its effects tend to be short lived.  Working with the energy is like re-weaving the karmic fabric - not like trying to make water flow uphill.  So the effects manifest more quickly; are more far reaching; and are essentially permanent.

Also, the Triple Working allows the energy to be focused on you, your professional life/business, your home/family - all at once.  This is important in situations where what seemed to begin as a negative influence that was affecting you in some way, has developed to the point it's affecting other areas of your life too. Negative and resistant energies can manifest in many ways, even if they are residual, they can, over time, create a 'complex' of low vibrational elements that can have very obvious and limiting results; exacerbating medical conditions for example; feelings of anxiety; feeling ungrounded. In this way it works as a reversal but can deal issues and resolve those issues on a karmic level for a permanent solution, rather than working on the symptoms.  This is the case whether the negative effects relate to malicious people, limiting beliefs you have held in the past, destructive behaviours you seem to be drawn to and even bad 'thinking habits'.

Although magickal change is permanent and occurs in real time, the effects will manifest gradually - but there will be changes very quickly and the changes are cumulative so it kind of builds momentum - as different areas are cleared, different areas are accessible for resolution.  Some choose to repeat the working or take the triple option to speed results in this way.  But also, negative influences will continue to come into our lives from time to time so some people like to take the KM cycle annually or every few months as a preventative kind of working.

The Ritual is also particularly useful for negative work environments, abusive relationships in the past, problems with grounding that may express as addictive or self-destructive behaviours, any malicious or intentional psychic attack whether it originates supernaturally or through use of black magick, or through natural means such as malicious intentions, jealousy etc. - even disgruntled business rivals (some people have the working performed for their business in fact).

As mentioned before, the source if any disharmony or negative influence doesn't need to be identified before using this method as it works by tracing karmic bonds back to source from you and resolving or dissolving them. So you don't need to focus on what's happening or what caused it and how to fix it; the spell is constructed in such a way that it does that part for you.

This is not a hex or curse and can't be used as one - it works by resolving any attachments to people, places and things of the past, present and future to prevent them manifesting hindrance or discord in your life. It can't be used for revenge or malicious intentions.  None of my work can.

The dissolution of negative karmic bonds doesn't disconnect you from your life or undo your past, but can be used to facilitate moving on from the past without fetters;  liberating you up to manifest change on all levels (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual); and always for the greater good.

The healing effect and a lifting of energy is usually noticed and reported at day 7-10 and increases during the ritual.  Sometimes this is reported within a few days especially for those having a Triple Working.

Also, as the Triple option allows focus on different aspects at once, positive changes in the home, professional environment as well as personally tend to be reported early on and continue throughout and beyond the cycle!

Samhain is the season of the 'final harvest' and energetically a very powerful time for magick of this type. So this month I am making additional spaces available and working an independent cycle from 31st October exclusively as an option for newsletter subscribers.  If you would like more information, please email me at mayastar.net@gmail.com

There Can Be A Better World | You are an EXTRAORDINARY person; just like EVERYONE ELSE

Please enjoy the new Anonymous Official vid below ♡

https://youtu.be/SWs4Se6i0Xs

I think people know what my principles are. What I believe in, in a philosophical sense. My Aspergers may make this easier for me to see sometimes because my mind constantly looks for 'faults in the matrix' so to speak...and never could understand the concept of 'assumed authority'. I consider it makes me a hippie. Others might say it makes me a heretic, rebel or radical. But I know, I'm not the only one.

I teach for my work and I love what I do. I have contact with people who are seeking to learn alternatives to the mainstream every day of my life. And I am honoured to work with people all around the world who have maintained or are working on empowering themselves...finding themselves...considering there may be another way.

My emphasis has always been on teaching people for the purpose of empowerment...not teaching to learn by rote but to find the confidence in themselves and their choices and views that the world tends to undermine.

I am a human being. I care about the things that make us human beings. I don't care about those things that undermine our humanity, happiness and freedom. I do have religious and spiritual beliefs. But I first and foremost believe in people.

Remember, you are and EXTRAORDINARY person - just like EVERYONE ELSE. If anyone makes you feel that's not true, question their motivation. No one is the boss of you!

My feeds have personal stuff in. They reflect my personal beliefs and I expect you can tell quite a bit about me from them. (Even if I didn't share openly that kind of information through my work and personal blog I think I have used social media so long people have an idea of what my principles are!). If this resonates with you, please follow my feed/blogs. And please share those things that move you with your friends too.

Love to all xx

Below...the passionate words of Will McAvoy from the video...

Will McAvoy: It's not the greatest country in the world, professor, that's my answer.

Moderator: You're saying...

Will McAvoy: Yes.

Moderator: Let's talk about...

Will McAvoy: Fine. Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paychecks, but he gets to hit you with it anytime he wants. It doesn't cost money, it costs votes. It costs airtime and column inches. You know why people don't like liberals? Because they lose. If liberals are so fuckin' smart, how come they lose so GODDAM ALWAYS!

Sharon: Hey...

Will McAvoy: [turns to Lewis] And with a straight face, you're going to tell students that America is so starspangled awesome that we're the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom, Japan has freedom, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, BELGIUM has freedom! Two hundred and seven sovereign states in the world, like 180 of them have freedom.

Moderator: All right...

Will McAvoy: And yeah, you... sorority girl. Just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there are some things you should know, and one of them is: There is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we're the greatest country in the world. We're seventh in literacy, twenty-seventh in math, twenty-second in science, forty-ninth in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number four in labor force, and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies. None of this is the fault of a 20-year-old college student, but you, nonetheless, are without a doubt a member of the WORST-period-GENERATION-period-EVER-period, so when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about! Yosemite?

Will McAvoy: [pause] We sure used to be. We stood up for what was right. We fought for moral reasons, we passed laws, struck down laws for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed, we cared about our neighbors, we put our money where our mouths were, and we never beat our chest. We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and we cultivated the world's greatest artists and the world's greatest economy. We reached for the stars, acted like men. We aspired to intelligence; we didn't belittle it; it didn't make us feel inferior. We didn't identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn't scare so easy. We were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men, men who were revered. The first step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. America is not the greatest country in the world anymore.

Will McAvoy: [to moderator] Enough?

I LOVE | The Black Eyed Peas | One world, one love, one passion, one tribe, one understanding, cause you and me can become one ♡

https://youtu.be/J6dBTYewZ4Q

One Tribe, one time, one planet, one race
It's all one blood, don't care about your face
The color of your eye or the tone of your skin
Don't care where ya are
Don't care where ya been
Cause where we gonna go
Is where we wanna be
The place where the little language is unity
And the continent is called Pangaea
And the main ideas are connected like a spear
No propaganda, They tried to upper hand us
Cause man I'm loving this peace
Man, man, I'm loving this peace
Man, man, I'm loving this peace
I don't need no leader
That's gonna force feed a
Concept that make me think I need to
Fear my brother and fear my sister
And shoot my neighbor or my big missile
If I had an enemy
If I had an enemy
If I had an enemy, then my enemy is gonna try to come and kill me
Cause I'm his enemy
There's one tribe ya'll

We are one people
Let's cast amnesia, forget about all that evil
Forget about all that evil, that evil that they feed ya
Let's cast amnesia, forget about all that evil
That evil that they feed ya
Remember that we're one people
We are one people
One people, one people

One tribe, one tribe
One tribe, one time, one planet, one race
Race, one love, one people, one and
Too many things that's causing one to
To forget about the main cause
Connecting, uniting
But the evil is seen and alive in us
So our hopes are colliding
And our peace is sinking like Poseidon
But, we know that the one
The evil one is threatened by the sum
So he'll come and try and separate the sum
But he dumb, he didn't know we had a way to overcome
Rejuvenated by the beating of the drum
Come together by the cycle of the hum
Freedom when all become one
Forever

....

One love, one blood, one people
One heart, one beat, we equal
Connected like the internet
United that's how we do
Let's break walls, so we see through
Let love and peace lead you
We could overcome the complication cause we need to
Help each other, make these changes
Brother, sister, rearrange this
The way I'm thinking that we can change this bad condition
Wait, use you mind and not your greed
Let's connect and then proceed
This is something I believe
We are one, we're all just people

Lord help me out
Trying to figure out what it's all about
Cause we're one in the same
Same joy, same pain
And I hope that you're there when I need ya
Cause maybe we need amnesia
And I don't wanna sound like a preacher
But we need to be one

One world, one love, one passion
One tribe, one understanding
Cause you and me can become one

PLEASE #ShareTheLove

My 27 Year Journey to Veganism | Please share your experiences!

An update on my cruelty free skincare experiment for Stoptober...this is a blog I hadn't intended to write at all. I planned to review products first and foremost. But something came up! So here goes...

So far I have had mixed results with cruelty free skincare. But a little research into one product and suddenly my motivation for a switch was called into question. Which brought up a lot more questions for my motivation for following a plant based vegan diet.

This may be long...so please bear with me!

This is how it started...for Stoptober I decided to switch to cruelty free skin care. And one of my favourite discoveries was Argan Oil - a truly fantastic moisturiser! I used to love Bio Oil as an all over moisturiser. I tried switching to Jojoba oil at one time because I felt a tad uncomfortable with the idea of Bio Oil being a mineral oil (petrol on my skin???).

However, I have since found Bio Oil is vegan and not tested on animals. In fact a lot of products I have aren't tested animals. But that doesn't mean they're natural at all. And although my guideline was "cruelty free", I find actually what I consider more important is something more natural and less potentially carcinogenic.

Realising this meant my Stoptober experiment wasn't so much cruelty free but more natural as well as cruelty free, I realised as a brand I favoured Lush because I could understand the ingredients labels! Most of their products are vegan...some have lanolin (from sheep's wool) and honey in. These are considered vegetarian but not vegan. But none of them are tested on animals (though sheep would probably attest to the fact lanolin keeps their wooly coats manageable!).

This realisation...cruelty free doesn't mean natural, made me think about my vegan diet. You can find all kinds of refined carb snacks that are vegan. I think even oreos might be. But I won't be eating junk food any time soon just because it's vegan. It would be possible to be a very unhealthy vegan!

Also, I am not actually a vegan because I have honey and apple cider vinegar as an alkalising alternative to wake up to...honey is an animal product. So my diet is actually "plant based vegan with honey"! Some vegans may drop the honey but go for the refined carbs and high fructose corn syrup. So...what was my motivation for eating vegan? How did I arrive at a plant based vegan diet without seeming to do it deliberately? So many people consider it a radical change...but for me, there wasn't any point of radical change. So how and why did I take this route?

There are 3 main concerns for me & I have watched some great lectures on the health benefits of a plant based vegan diet that convince me, there is absolutely no going back for me now. I am committed to my eating habits...but it took 27 years for me to make this decision! It was a 27 year gradual process...and it all began...

...when I was 15. I saw a video in my biology class at school showing a slaughter house. I was horrified to see pigs stunned with a bolt to the head being attached by one leg to a chain and pulled upwards, and the voice over admitting that sometimes the bolt didn't kill the pigs and sure enough some were waking up and screaming. Literally screaming. In pain or fear. Some may say, oh it was probably unconscious and having a seizure or something - no one would kill animals in such an inhumane way. I'd recommend some research!

Seeing that at 15 made me vegetarian in one minute. But I ate junk. I didn't even know gelatin came from cows. So I wasn't a very educated vegetarian. Later I added fish back...maybe ten years later. And I had free range eggs and didn't boycott dairy.

That was until I saw what 'free range' actually meant!

I don't want to bash people over the head with the ethics or horror stories. But the fact is, free range means thousands of chickens that have been genetically altered and given special food they wouldn't usually eat, to make them grow massive "boobs" (as the consumer wants the white meat), crammed into an enormous warehouse/"barn".

Unfortunately these poor mutated chickens grow so fast and so lopsided some just collapse and die under their own weight. Some can walk a few steps before falling over. They are unlikely to ever see daylight. They have their beaks cut off to stop them attacking  each other. They are not in any way free to range anywhere. And they've been bred and fed to be physically disabled.

I felt I'd been scammed and mislead. Because I had been!

Some people may see that as ok. I personally don't though. So I had an ethical issue with the conditions animals were raised in and also the ways they were killed.

When the fuss over GM crops put organic veg into our supermarkets (so strange...I thought all vet was organic by virtue of the fact it's veg!), I decided I would eat organic meat. I didn't buy it v often though. Months could elapse without me having any. Because I don't know how to prepare meat for a start. I was vegetarian when I learnt to cook. And I had never really liked meat much anyway!

So it meant although I no longer identified as vegetarian, my diet wasn't a typical Western one. Except in that over a period of years all the veg had been removed and I lived on snacks...raw nuts and seeds, fish, oatcakes, rice cakes and phases of various junk foods. Not at all balanced! I worked nights and never ate a whole meal. I lived on snacks but mostly they were healthy. And for long periods they would be vegan (by default, not design).

Then I found out, organic animals were killed in the same slaughter houses as abused animals. I didn't need to see Earthlings for that to make me feel uncomfortable eating meat again. So I limited it to Christmas dinners.

I did however, still eat fish. Until I heard about the industrial fishing practices. And I felt uncomfortable subsidising the practice by buying it. So I switched back to nuts as my staple.

I still was eating dairy though. And as my fish intake went down, my dairy went up and suddenly, I found I had a dairy allergy. I thought food allergies upset your digestion. But my allergy made my hands itch and fingers swell. It took a while to work out it was dairy doing it. But once I had, I couldn't justify eating dairy as my body clearly didn't consider dairy food - even if my brain did!

This left me down to a v restricted diet because of my habits of snacking. And so, after some research and consideration, I decided I would get a slow cooker and make a big stew each day...full of veg...chickpeas and lentils and v healthy. Then I got a rice cooker to make perfect brown rice to go with my vegan stew.

Being lazy (it only takes half an hour to prepare my stew and leave it slow cooking on a v low setting while I sleep...giving me 4 servings of stew in a day!) this seemed almost miraculously easy! And that may sound like rabbit food to others but it works for me!

Others would think that's not a varied diet and they would find it too boring to eat raw nuts and seeds and vegan stew with brown rice every day - but I find I have come to redefine food. If you eat something that gives you calories but little to no nutrition, you're not really eating food. Food would actually be good for you and nutritious...if you consume mostly calorific products that have little value to your body, your body isn't going to like that.  In the short term it may be ok. But long term you would be malnourished.

Anyway, within weeks I felt amazing on this new plan. Really amazing!

I lost some weight
My skin got very clear
I slept better
I had better energy throughout the night (still nocturnal)
My digestion was better
My nails got stronger
My PMS symptoms went away

I still wasn't committed to a vegan diet. I didn't stop to think about it much to be honest. A lot was going on. My dad was ill. And I occasionally didn't make my stew and ate fast food. A couple of times I ate junk for a few days in a row. I soon realised it only took a few days on nutritionally deficient food products to feel crap on it. I got cravings for stew and rice! I felt sort of 'poisoned' by junk food. I wasn't sure if it was all the salt...or just the lack of actual nutrients. The sugar? Chemicals? Refined carbs? But those experiences convinced me, for my health (and because I felt and looked better on it and had no qualms of conscience about animal abuse on it), I would go vegan and stay vegan.

A vegan diet...not a vegan lifestyle. I watched Cowspiracy and Forks Over Knives. I watched Vedgucated and Fed Up. I watched several lectures on YouTube about independent studies into the health benefits of a vegan diet. And I watched Earthlings. Earthlings wasn't a game changer for me. It was useful for information...as was Cowspiracy. But these only made me sure of the decisions I had made. If I hadn't given up dairy due to allergy I would have after watching Cowspiracy and Earthlings.

I could go on and on about all the problems with animal abuse, modern farming, the health implications...but these things were things that convinced me I had made a good choice rather than the things that made me change my diet. So for my story, they're possibly not as relevant as they might be for others.

I do recommend everyone educate themselves and watch those documentaries though. After all, you wouldn't donate money to a charity for animal rescue if you found out that the rescued animals were all going to be euthanised by being gassed if no one homed them after a month. So, if you choose to eat meat, dairy and eggs, it makes sense to find out where your food comes from and that you don't have a problem with the way it was treated while alive or how it was killed...and anything that was added to it (flavour enhancers...colouring...various chemicals) before it made it to the supermarket. Because subsidising practices that your conscience takes issue with could lead to a habit of ignoring your conscience in other situations...and living at odds with yourself isn't conducive to health and happiness!

Maybe it's a bit like when you were a kid and constantly being told "Don't put that in your mouth, you don't know where it's been" really! You would like to be assured it didn't go anywhere bad and nothing bad happened simply by virtue of the fact a supermarket bought it and sold it to you. Because, they wouldn't endorse something unethical eh? They wouldn't deliberately put sweet food and junk at the eye level of children for example? They have your best interests at heart don't they? They must do...if you're dead you won't be buying food! Right?

Well, unfortunately, these days you can't rely on the ethics of others. There's a lot of money to be made in keeping people sick but not dead.

However, it's not all doom and gloom! You have access power as a consumer you couldn't have dreamt of just a couple of decades ago! The internet!

The internet has led to quite a revolution in "personal power"...steering changes as people become aware of the resources and information available to them. Nowadays it isn't considered the action of a paranoid minority if, when the newspapers tell you one thing...like milk is good for you...you go online and read independent clinical trials to see if it's true and who sponsored the trial!

We have access to information that it would have been impossible to find before. And increasingly people are becoming more confident in trusting their own judgement of the facts than the version they hear in the mainstream.

It's uncomfortable for some. Shouldn't someone else be in charge of this stuff? Don't we pay big organisations to protect us and make sure everything is ok? Isn't it illegal for a company to mislead you in their advertising? Well, most of us thought so once...but you only have to find out you've been deceived once...putting your health and life and that of those you love, in some kind of compromise, to realise, you have your best interests at heart...but massive food and drug companies can make money from you while you eat...and more money from you if you're sick. They may not have your best interests at heart. In fact, it seems unlikely they do.

This information revolution can seem scary because it means our trust in any 'authority' is undermined. Wasn't that once the domain of crazy conspiracy theorists? Not people like you and me?  Also, it puts a responsibility on the individual that's new and not necessarily welcome - but you may also see that it empowers the individual to make informed choices about their lives and health; to consider their perspective, morality and ethics, with the facts rather than the spin.

But coming full circle...my journey of incremental change to non radical veganism started because at 15, I saw meat came from animals. Advertising and packaging try to prevent us making that association as much as possible. But it made an impression on me and my very first ethical dilemma was the suffering of innocent beings. My response was natural. I think most people would feel similarly if they met their steak under different circumstances...

I used the example to a friend to illustrate this point, that if a cow ran into my garden one day and it was scared and panicky and upset, my natural reaction (and most people's...including theirs) would be to try to calm it. To make eye contact. Talk to it. Take out a bowl of water. Try to soothe it with your voice and body language. Try to get closer to it to feed it from your hand. You recognise fear or distress in a cow even if you're not a cow! And your instinct would be to try to help it and reassure it, it wasn't alone and it was safe. That you weren't a threat etc. (I picked a cow since we don't keep them as pets).

If I phoned an animal rescue centre and they said, oh yes, that cow escaped from a slaughter house. We will come and get it and take it back to be killed. I'd not feel comfortable with that. Personally I would feel a sense of responsibility for the wellbeing of the cow even though our paths had crossed accidentally. The chances are, I would think, no wonder it ran away and was scared...I don't want a hand in the slaughter of this animal.

Then, in some crazy gesture to try to protect the cow, I'd probably try to friend with a horse box to help me hide the cow, tell the people it had run away again. And try to find an organisation that would rescue it and allow it to live out its natural life.

Chances are this would break lots of laws. A cow is usually owned by a big company who pays farmers to 'grow' their animals for slaughter etc.

But faced with an animal suffering in any way, no matter if it's one you think of as a pet or a wild animal or a domesticated living food source, most people's dominant sense would be compassion. And if they thought someone was going to hurt the animal, they would naturally want to protect it.

Or maybe that's just me? Am I overly empathic?  Am I being sentimental or even childish to think of an animal that way? Is it because 27 years ago I saw that film at school that I look at an animal and see it as an animal with feelings that doesn't deserve to suffer. As a living being that has certain fundamental rights whatever its species? Am I being controversial, extreme or inflammatory to suggest a cow bred only to be killed for meat is a living being at all?

I said I wouldn't bash people over the head with politics...or even morality. If you don't see value or rights in another living being by virtue of its species then eating it regardless of how it was raised or killed wouldn't tweak your conscience. If you don't have an issue with eating meat but have an issue with unnecessary abuse of those animals, that does create an ethical dilemma for you and you might want to find out more. The consumer can vote with their wallet. So there is something you can do about it in a practical sense.

What I am saying in summary is...my journey to where I am now will be different to other people's. My issue was first with the ethics of what I considered animal abuse. Then with the misinformation about ideas such 'free range'. Then with industrial fishing and oceanic dead zones. Then with health. Later backed by the environmental impact of modern farming. Mostly, I don't want to subsidise what to me seem immoral practices carried out on my behalf. I don't want to pay someone to take out a hit on an abused chicken where a machine may or may not cut its throat before it's head is dunked in boiling water. Not all chickens suffer such an inhumane slaughter...but if I ate them, I couldn't help but wonder...did my chicken ever see daylight? Could it walk? Which part of the slaughter conveyer finished it off? Was it ever happy or even content? Did it suffer? Was it ever in pain or afraid? And does it taste so good I can turn a blind eye and hope for the best?

I am autistic...I have aspergers which means I sort of don't have a blind eye. I also tend to whitter on and convey my thoughts and opinions in a stream of consciousness! So please excuse the length and style of this blog!
These are my opinions...and my own thoughts. I don't expect others to share them. But I am interested to know...what are your thoughts on your food choices? Modern farming? Veganism? Your health? Animal rights...animal wrongs? If you changed your diet at any time, what prompted the change? If you've seen Cowspiracy, Earthlings, Forks Over Knives or Vegucated, did they affect the way you ate...or thought about food?

We want to live by each other's happiness | Our knowledge has made us cynical

Please follow this feed, like, share & subscribe ♡

From "The Great Dictator" "I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible; Jew, Gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone, and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way. Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness"
